"My rule is "if you see them hit the shoulder, just pull off to the side immediately." Obviously they aren't burning a U-ie because they forgot their donuts."
That's a good rule Rook.
"The other rule I do my best to follow is to never go fast anywhere where anyone on the road can see me and slow down immediately when another vehicle comes into site. I assume any car out there is a cop car."
This one I find difficult to follow, probably half the time! In Arizona 'criminal' speed is 20 mph over, or over 85 mph. Quite often traffic is rolling 85-90 in a 65 dual lane state highway. I have to admit it is difficult to hold it down when soccer moms are passing me! Our DPS shoots radar front and rear on the roll. If the traffic is light, it's easier to spot the highway patrol, but they are using various cars with those mini light setups or no external lights. Maybe I should invest in a radar detector, but not having one for many years I'm not sure if they are that effective.
One of the only good twisty roads in my area is marked at 40 mph. Yet, including a margin of speed safety, this road is good for speeds from 65 to 140. Fortunately this isn't a road that our DPS patrols, although occasionally SO will patrol it. The greater hazards are the dual lane state roads that connect the various tourist hot spots. I usually keep up with traffic and space between the packs. Me to officer, "just keeping up with traffic and staying between the packs, sir", has yielded a verbal "slow it down" warning on several occasions, even from one officer pointing out there was no traffic at the time!
Although my need for speed has matured, it still takes discipline on the 14 to hold it down, and sometimes I just have to let her rip. And, with the wife riding co-pilot, she likes to feel triple digits at least once on every ride, my kind of gal.
